Tirupati: Despite tight security at the Sri Venkateswara Temple here, a few gold-plated leaves of the umbrella placed on Golden Chariot was stolen by unidentified persons.
The umbrella placed in Vahana Mandapam opposite the Temple in a closed shed made with strong steel sheets was stolen by cutting the steel sheet.
While clarifying the incident at a press conference here today, Temple Joint Executive Officer K Bhaskar said the gold-plated leaves of umbrella over the chariot were allegedly stolen by some miscreants yesterday.
The loss was between Rs 50,000 to 70,000 and not crores as only few gm of gold was used for the umbrella leaves, he said adding the structure was made in 1992 by craftsmen from Poompuhar of Tamil Nadu. As many as 66 gold-plated leaves decorated the umbrella.
Only few grams of thin foils of gold have been used along with 3 kg of copper for the purpose, he added.
