Hyderabad: For a change, Osmania University (OU) campus remained peaceful all through the day on Sunday, however, reports of lathicharge on students at Kakatiya University (KU) in Warangal, stoked a fresh wave of protests by the evening.
At around 4 pm, nearly 300 students gathered near Arts College to protest the reported lathicharge on KU campus and took out a rally. The students decided to take out a rally from Arts College building to `B' Hostel.
The sloganeering students were stopped at B Hostel by paramilitary forces who fired tear gas shells at them. The students retreated to `A' Ground and started pelting stones on to the Uppal road even as police retaliated with tear gas. The standoff finally ended at around 8.30 pm, nearly two hours later and after 20 rounds of tear gas shells.
Meanwhile, police resorted to a lathicharge when 10-15 locals of Manikeshwar Nagar tried to break the barricade and reach the main road at around 5.30 pm. Initially, policemen asked them to return to their locality, but the locals got into a verbal duel with the security forces and refused to budge. Some locals rained stones on the police, who got furious and chased them into their homes. Unconfirmed reports said police raided houses to flush out the protestors. They took a local, Sudhakar, into custody after the 90-minute mayhem.
In the initial round of shelling, two students were injured, while three locals of Manikeshwar Nagar were hurt in the second round.
A Class VII student of St Anthony's School, Kushaiguda, Eashwar, who was playing cricket with his friends at `A' Ground, was hit by a tear gas shell.
OU JAC co-convener Tirumani Kondal said resistance would continue even in the coming days. "There will be a `Chalo OU' soon, where students from across the Telangana region will converge on the campus to express their solidarity with us. Police action on campus should stop," Kondal added.
In the morning, OU campus bore a deserted look with just a few students gathered at Arts College to stage peaceful protests.
