Stalin turns nostalgic at GH

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin today said he owed his life to the Government General Hospital familiar to Chennai people as GH.

While Addressing the gathering, Mr Stalin said GH had saved his life when he was detained in the Central Prison during the Emergency in 1975.

Turning nostalgic, he recalled when he was a detenue of Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during Emergency at the nearby Central Prison (Shifted to suburban Puzhal Central Prison), he had acute stomach pain and was brought to the hospital for treatment.

Dr Rangabashyam, who examined him, diagnosed that he had appendicitis at an advanced stage and said he required immediate surgery, failing which, it would pose danger to his life.

However, the escort police, who accompanied him, objected to immediate surgery, saying the procedure could be done only after getting permission from the prison authorities.

Overuling their objection, Dr Rangabashyam, without waiting for the permission went ahead with the surgery and saved his life, Mr Stalin recalled.
