50% Inter marks must for EAMCET

Hyderabad: Putting all speculations to rest, Eamcet authorities have decided to make 50 per cent marks in Intermediate examinations a mandatory requirement for admissions to engineering colleges. The rule will be included in the Eamcet notification to be issued on Thursday.

As per the new notification, students who qualify for Eamcet 2011 will be allowed admissions in engineering colleges only if they get 50 per cent marks in Intermediate. The new clause is introduced in the notification as per the instructions of All India Council of Technical Education ( AICTE).

There were apprehensions that the state might not introduce the 50 per cent rule for this year's Eamcet, as it was not prepared for the same. Hitherto, students required just 35 per cent marks in intermediate examinations to take admissions in engineering colleges.

However, according to Eamcet authorities, the 50 per cent rule is not going to have much of an impact on the admission process. "In the past five years, the number of Eamcet qualifiers who got less than 50 per cent marks in intermediate public examinations was less than 10 per cent of the total number of applicants. Hence the new rule is not going to make much of a difference in the state's engineering admissions," said M V Ramana Rao, convenor, Eamcet 2011.

Rao added that the number of students who would apply for Eamcet-2011 is expected to go up by 10 per cent this year. "The number of students in MPC (Math, Physics and Chemistry) II year is around 5.5 lakh this year. The number of students in medicine stream (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) is 1.2 lakh," the convener said, adding that the numbers had gone up this year as compared to last year. The sale of applications forms will commence from February 14. "This year the students who apply for Eamcet late will have to appear for the examinations from Hyderabad. Students can apply for Eamcet till April 25 with a fine of Rs 5,000 and till May 5 with a fine of Rs 10,000," Rao said. Eamcet 2011 examination will be held on May 8.

According to Eamcet authorities, students from other states might appear for the test as the examinations are being held early in May. "Since Eamcet was held on May 30 last year many students from other states had not appeared for it," the convenor said. This year students from Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are expected to write the state entrance test in large numbers.
