Extra crowds at Temples

Chennai: Many thronged temples across the city to have special darshans on January 1 for a prosperous 2011.The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam at T Nagar opened the Sri Venkateswara prayer hall on the temple premises from 2am till midnight on January 1. The premises were decorated with flowers, fruits and electrical lights, according to a release.

The Karumariamman temple in Tiruverkadu was opened at 12 midnight on January 1 and special abhishekam performed, before devotees were allowed in. Special darshan tickets priced at Rs 50 and Rs 25 will also be issued.

At Triplicane, the Parthasarathy temple will be open as usual early in the morning. Though no special pujas have been organised for the New Year, the temple administration has made arrangements to regulate crowds, said a temple official.

January 1 being pradosham, a sacred day for Saivaites, the Kapaleeswarar temple has made special arrangements to tackle the extra crowd as well devotees dropping in on account of the New Year. Apart from special pujas, the temple administration will issue darshan tickets costing Rs 100 and Rs 20.

At the Vadapalani Murugan temple also the authorities are planning to issue special darshan tickets.
