Techies enter politics

Bangalore: Two techies, three doctors and a doctorate were among the high-profile winners of the ZP/TP polls. Software engineer N C Kala won convincingly on a BJP ticket from Oorukerae ZP constituency in Tumkur district. "I'm thrilled and keenly looking forward to serving my village," said Kala, a former employee of Q-Soft Systems and Solutions in Bangalore. Now, she has her own software firm called Wide Spread Technologies in Seshadripuram, Bangalore, with a staff strength of 20.

Engineering graduate H S Ravishankar got elected from Chikkatotlukerae constituency of Tumkur on a BJP ticket. An elated Ravishankar told TOI: "I joined politics as I was fed up with the growing corruption. I want to serve the public and emerge as a model politician."

But Niranjan, a former HP employee and son of former speaker Venkatramanappa, who contested from Kalale constituency in Nanjangud taluk of Mysore district, was not so lucky. Even his political background didn't help him win. He'd given up his high-paying job in Bangalore to contest the elections.

Among doctors, former minister D Nagarajaiah's son Dr Ravi won from Amruturu of Kunigal taluk on a JD(S) ticket. Dr Shankare Gowda, popularly called the Five Rupee Doctor, won in the Gudda zilla panchayat. For the past two decades, he has providing medical service in the village, and his fee is just Rs 5.

Energy minister Shobha Karandlaje's close aide Chandrakala Bai, armed with a doctorate in social sciences, won from Ramapuram ZP under Kollegal in Chamarajnagar district. Chandrakala was Karandlaje's classmate at National College in Bangalore.

Along with Techies Three daily wage workers, two auto drivers and a security guard also won the TP elections from districts in North Karnataka.
