Chennai: More than 5,000 police personnel would be deployed on security duty in the megapolis ahead of ''Kaanum Pongal'' on January 17, marking the culmination of four-day Pongal festivities in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai City Police Commissioner T Rajendran told reporters here today that as the pongal festivities come during the weekends, the security arrangements would be in place from tomorrow.
The four-day Pongal festival commences tomorrow and ends with 'Kaanum Pongal' on January 17.
He said tight vigil would be maintained in all places, including the famous Marina beach, where hundreds and thousands of people from various parts of the state, were expected to congregate.
Police personnel would be manning the entire stretch of Kamarajar Salai on the Marina beach where a large number of people were expected to visit the MGR Memorial and Anna Samadhi.
Mr Rajendran said four all terrain vehicles, which was launched in Elliots Beach, would be deployed to patrol the beach front.
