Chennai: The city's Government General Hospital - one of the oldest and largest hospitals in Asia - will be named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said Thursday.
The chief minister announced this in the state assembly where he accepted the request of Congress legislator Peter Alphonse.
Alphonse requested that the hospital, popularly known as GH, be named after Rajiv Gandhi as his body was kept there after he was assassinated by a suicide bomber in May 1991.
The 347-year-old, 2,720-bed hospital is located opposite the Chennai Central Station.
