Chennai: City Police today warned that cases under Goondas Act would be slapped against those who assault the crew of the state-owned Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and damage public properties.
The Otteri police on Wednesday arrested six college students for assaulting an MTC driver near Otteri in North Chennai last night. All the six arrested have been remanded and sent to Puzhal prison.
According to police, six youths on three motorcycles stopped an MTC bus (route no. 29C) on Tuesday, alleging that it almost knocked them down when they were coming on Kutch Road in Ottery. The youth, who had chased the bus, got in and slapped driver Suresh.
The gang members, who were under the influence of alcohol, also assaulted the driver and the conductor. Following this incident, around 15 MTC buses called off their services in support of their colleague during late night hours on Tuesday. The commotion between the students and the bus drivers continued till 3 am. The drivers refused to resume services and demanded the arrest of the youths who assaulted their colleague
Apart from Santosh, those arrested were Manivannan, Jothi Pandian, Satya and Karthik. They would be produced before a court and sent for judicial remand.
Taking serious view of the incident, Mr Rajendran warned of severe action against those who indulge in violence or destroy public and private properties.
He added that police could even invoke the provisions of Goondas Act against people who attacked public servants.
