Stalin attacks Jayalalitha for Kalaignar Housing Scheme

Chennai: Deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday launched a blistering attack on former chief minister J. Jayalalitha for belittling the DMK regime’s flagship Kalaignar Housing Scheme, which aims to construct 18 lakh concrete houses and make the state hut-free.

Taking strong exception to the AIADMK leader calling the programme a “toilet scheme” since the government allotted only Rs 75,000 to each beneficiary “which could only be used to build toilets”, Mr Stalin said she was insulting poor beneficiaries of the scheme and not the government. “Her remark really pains me,” Mr Stalin added.

“The government, based on the Opposition’s demand, increased the grant to Rs 75,000 from Rs 60,000. The beneficiaries are happy and are showing great enthusiasm to build concrete houses,” he said.

Replying to the debate on Governor’s address, Mr Stalin said if she was not generous enough to appreciate the scheme, Ms Jayalalithaa should at least not disparage it. He said work orders would be given to construct 3 lakh more houses before March over above the 3 lakh houses sanctioned already. Mr Stalin said the previous AIADMK regime had extended less money to construct concrete houses under the Indira Avas Yojana than is being given through the Kalaignar Housing Scheme.

Dismissing her remarks that the governor’s address would only lead the state on a destructive path, Mr Stalin said it would lead the state in a constructive direction. Listing out various mega power generation projects initiated by the DMK government, he said the governor’s address was a milestone as it reflected TN’s success in various sectors.
